I didn't come up through a textbook. I learned bookkeeping from the inside — working in a business where no one was explaining what the numbers meant, and figuring it out myself under real pressure, in real time.
Before that, I was an account manager — good at my job, comfortable with how my career was tracking. Then I stepped into a business environment where the financial side landed in my lap without a manual. I taught myself reconciliation at night. I pulled reports I didn't fully understand and tried to make sense of them before anyone asked questions I couldn't answer.
That experience changed everything about how I work with clients. Because I know the feeling — the quiet anxiety of not knowing if the business is actually okay. The avoidance. The gap between what the numbers say and what you can actually do with that information.
I went back to study. I built The Accounts Department from scratch — deliberately, carefully, with a very clear picture of what I wanted it to be and what I refused to let it become. Not a tick-the-box service. Not a report-and-disappear operation. A practice built around one thing: making sure the people I work with always know exactly where they stand.
Financial services have a habit of making business owners feel like passengers in their own business. Reports get sent. Numbers get filed. And the person running the business is left no clearer on what it all means or what to do next.
I believe that's not good enough. Your numbers are the most powerful tool in your business — and they should be working for you, not sitting in a folder you never open.
Compliance is the floor, not the ceiling.
Revenue is vanity. Profit is truth.
You deserve to understand your own numbers.
Busy doesn't mean profitable.
I'm not interested in collecting clients. I'm interested in the moment a business owner opens their books and finally understands what they're looking at. In the business decisions they make differently because the numbers are finally clear. That's the work.
